On any summertime day, you’ll see children, moms, dads, teenagers, aunts, uncles and grandparents getting-off the fishing boats at the marinas on Alabama’s Gulf Coast. When the “Wishbone,” captained by Reuben Ware and based at SanRoc Cay Marina in OrangeOrange Beach charters Beach, Ala., unloads his fishermen for the day, the scene is much like the door of a circus being opened as excited, smiling children come ashore.

“We had five children and three adults from Birmingham Ala., and Corinth, Mississippi, fishing with us on a 6-hour trip,” Captain Ware explains. “We fished on artificial reefs, and everyone caught fish. The red snapper season has really been good this year, with plenty of snapper for everyone to catch. I’ve enjoyed seeing the youngsters, moms and dads fishing together.” When Ware’s boat unloaded, we talked with Claiborne Crommelin of Birmingham, who said, “I had my three children and my niece and nephew on the ‘Wishbone’ fishing today. The kids loved being out on the Gulf of Mexico and catching fish. All the youngsters caught fish. Our family has a place down here at the beach, and we come as often as we can. The Orange Beach/Gulf Shores area has a nice family atmosphere. All our youngsters have enjoyed swimming and going fishing.”

Michelle and Will Burns landed at Orange Beach Marina with their sons, Lane and Keaten, and said, “We came to Orange Beach on a vacation, and we’ve really had a good time. We’ve caught red snapper, king mackerel, triggerfish and cobia. Our son Lane really likes to fish, and we’ve all had a great time.”

Jeremy Lowery and his son Eli came to Orange Beach to fish this summer from Jay, Florida “This was oOrange Beach chartersur first trip to Orange Beach to go fishing, I had a lot of fun catching all the fish we did, and Eli carried the bait for just about everybody on the boat. We had been to Orange Beach before, but this was the first time we’d been fishing here. Our whole family went together this time, including my father in-law, my mother in-law, my wife, her two sisters and her brother and all the kids. We’ve caught fish all day long on the charter boat ‘Intruder’ (850-232-4461). When we haven’t been fishing, the family has enjoyed sitting on the beach and watching the kids swim. The Alabama Gulf Coast is a great place to bring your family, fish and have a good time.”

Not only is Alabama Gulf Coast a fun family-fishing spot, the more-than-7,000 artificial reefs there attract anglers from around the world. David Poole from Perth, Australia, explained, “We caught quite a few red snapper - some really-nice ones. I’ve never seen snapper fishing any better than what we’ve experienced while fishing with Distraction Charters (251-975-8111). I only get to come about once a year to the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area, but I look forward to coming here, catching fish, eating delicious seafood and seeing and enjoying the white beaches.”

Better-Than-Fried Red Snapper

This delicious, heart-healthy recipe that’s easy to prepare features red snapper fillets that taste fried but don’t have the added calories.

Ingredients:Orange Beach charters
2 large egg whites
3/4-cup plain dried bread crumbs (may need to adjust this amount; also Panko crumbs work well, Italian bread crumbs, etc.)
4 red snapper fillets, about 4-ounces each
1/4-teaspoon salt
1/4-teaspoon pepper
Juice of 1 lemon

In a pie plate, whisk the two large egg whites with a fork just until frothy. Place bread crumbs on waxed paper. Squeeze lemon juice over the red snapper fillets, and sprinkle the fillets with salt and pepper. Dip each fillet into egg whites, and then coat with bread crumbs. Arrange on baking sheet coated with nonstick spray. Broil 3 to 4 minutes or until golden brown, turning over once.
