Orange Beach ChartersEditor’s Note: Captain Bobby Walker, who owns the “Summer Breeze II,” docked at Zeke’s Landing Marina (www.zekeslanding.com) in Orange Beach, Alabama, fishes offshore in July.

“On our 2-day trips, we’ve been catching good numbers of yellowfin tuna that will weigh from 40 to 80 pounds or more, 8- to 12-pound blackfin tuna and a good number of wahoo,” Walker explains. “Our anglers caught two yellowfin tuna, the biggest weighing 185 pounds and another 184 pounds. The gag grouper season has just come back in, and we’ve caught a 40-pounder. The 8- to 12-pound scamp grouper bite has been very good, with some up to 20 pounds.”

Although red snapper season has ended, Walker’s customers are still catching and releasing them. “We’ve caught quite a few 15- to 20-pounders and some nice mahi mahi on longer trips, when trolling out or back to the dock. On 6- and 8-hour trips, our anglers are catching 100- to 200-pound sharks that give our fishermen all the fight they want. We’ve also been catching 2- to 6-pound vermilion snapper.”

Orange Beach FishingThe Alabama Gulf Coast’s water cleared up this past week from early July. “I was surprised that happened after all the rain our area had last week,” Walker says. “Two things have helped us this year with our fishing are easterly currents and easterly winds that have kept our water clean and pretty. I’ll be going offshore this next week on 18-hour and 2-day trips for good catches of tuna, wahoo, grouper and snapper.”
