Editor’s Note: David Thornton guides on the Gulf State Park Pier in Gulf Shores, Alabama, and along the beaches, the jetties and other inshore locations.

Orange Beach Fishing“Twenty tarpon were hooked at the Gulf State Park Pier in one day last week,” David Thornton reports. “Pier anglers really had a good time watching those tarpon dance on their tails. The tarpon we’ve been hooking look like they’ll weigh 50 to 80 pounds with some weighing more. Here’s a quick rundown on the wide variety of fish anglers have caught this last week on the pier.

“Bluefish: We’ve caught large numbers of nice-sized bluefish off the pier with jigs and bubble rigs.

“Spanish mackerel: Bubble rigs and jigs have caught Spanish mackerel weighing 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 pounds.

“King mackerel: July 4 saw a good run of king mackerel at the pier.

“Redfish: Big schools of giant redfish came within casting distance of the pier two or three times a day last week and should continue throughout the rest of the summer.

Orange Beach Charters“Spadefish: The number of spadefish caught on the pier has dropped drastically since early summer.

“Flounder: Anglers are catching limits of flounder on bull minnows with the bigger flounder caught on jigs with a strip of cut bait on the hook. They bounce the jigs on the bottom around the pilings.

“Pompano: Pompano generally are scarce at this time of year but not this summer. The water’s not as hot as usual, and 2- to 4-pound pompano are being caught off the beach.

“Speckled trout: The most reliable fish being caught at the pier right now, they’re holding close to the pier. In the clear water, we can sight fish for the schools and catch 1- to 3-pounders, with some 8-pound trout swimming around the pier.”
