Read Your Way Around the Beach for Fun Prizes
A vacation is all about an escape to a new place, and that’s one reason reading and beach getaways go hand-in-hand. A sun-warmed beach chair, crashing waves and a good book are all the makings of the perfect afternoon as you lose yourself in fantasy worlds and made-up realities. Reading at the beach is a great way to relax and get away from it all.
In Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, we love a good book. Of course, our favorites are those written by Alabama authors or set in our home state, and we want to share them with you. Whether you want to lose yourself in a tale of mystery, swoon over a romance novel or relive Civil War battles, there’s a myriad of books to choose from in numerous genres. For your Gulf Shores vacation reading enjoyment, select from our list of books and set the tone for a literary escape. Come discover a whole new state of intrigue on Alabama’s white-sand beaches.
Have you ever visited a place after reading about it in a book?
you know where the small Alabama town of Monroeville is if you hadn’t
read “To Kill a Mockingbird”? Chances are, you wouldn’t. What if you
could read a novel and immediately have digital access to a place
described? With today’s technology, readers can download a book on their
electronic device and with embedded links, instantly browse a tourism
website! The SouthEastern Literary Tourism Initiative (SELTI) is working
with the Alabama Tourism Department, the University of Alabama, as well
as two other colleges, to promote tourism fiction. SELTI has already
published two tourism-themed novels and holds an annual tourism fiction
writing contest. Learn more.
SELTI founder Patrick Brian Miller penned
“Blind Fate,” recognized as the first tourism novel with an interactive
tourism guide embedded with links. The novel includes the Rosa Parks
Museum, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, the Montgomery Museum of Fine
Arts and other cultural attractions. Purchase “Blind Fate” here
